In April 2011, FOWSP organised a competition in conjunction with Wonga Park Primary School. The competition was for posters for a “Your Water, Your Future” campaign. Entrants were required to design a publicity poster to raise awareness of the importance of looking after the Yarra River and its inhabitants, who are becoming endangered through the impact of litter.
The prize winners in each year-group received a variety of environmental posters and information, from Parks Victoria, Melbourne Water, VNPA, YRKA and FOWSP. They also received a Stephen Parish book on animals and insects, a trowel and a plant from the FOWSP Nursery. The overall winners in each year group were also given a $20 Australian Geographic voucher. The School was given a cheque towards library books, to the value $450. The prizes were also sponsored by Melbourne Water, and we thank them for their support.
Within the School, the competition was organised by Teacher Matt Macreadie, and the posters were created in the students' art classes, under the watchful eye of their teacher, Liz Kearton. The final judging was undertaken by Peter Hanson, and Peta Cumming and Jason Patton of FOWSP. The presentations were made at the School assembly on 1st July. Artur Muchow, Secretary of FOWSP, was on hand to present the $450 cheque to the school Principal, Julie Crawford.
FOWSP is indebted to Ian Penrose of YRKA, who spent the better part of a day, delivering his wonderful Powerpoint presentation on the state of the Yarra, to set the scene for the competition.
We are hoping to continue these competitions in the future, to include further schools in the Warrandyte State Park area.
With regards to judging the posters, once again, I must commend all the students on their sensational efforts. We are indebited to all those who participated. Of particular mention is the student, who, with a healthy grasp of irony, included a cut-out of a ‘Dr Harry Cooper’ product floating down their river - superb!
