In late 2009, FOWSP organised a competition in conjunction with a local Primary School. The competition was entitled “Your Water, Your Future”. Entrants were required to design a publicity poster, or multimedia presentation raise awareness of the damage that litter was doing to our environment, especially our wildlife such as platypus and ducks, which are dying due to rubbish fouling the Yarra River.
The winners in each Grade were given a $50 Australian Geographic voucher and the School was given books to the value $500. The prizes were sponsored by the Warrandyte Community Bank Branch of the Bendigo Bank and we thank them for their support.
Within the School, the competition was organised by Lyn Regan and the final judging was undertaken by Belinda Mackowski of the Manningham Leader Newspaper, Danny Mathers of the Warrandyte Bendigo Bank and Kelly Wooster and Jason Patton of FOWSP. The presentations were made at the School assembly on December 10, after a fantastic presentation about the Yarra River and its inhabitants by Ian Penrose of Yarra Riverkeepers. Mark Challen, Branch Manager of the Warrandyte Bendigo Bank was on hand to assist with the presentations.
Given the success, of this competition, in 2010 we are planning to conduct other such competitions and hope to include other schools in the Warrandyte area.
On the topic of judging, I must say that the fantastic level of work presented by the students made for, at times, a difficult judging process - of particular note are some of the multimedia presentations, many of which should have some business feeling inadequate. And well done to the person who managed to grab the FOWSP and Parks Victoria logos for their presentation! Many thanks to all those who participated - Jason.
