In November 2011, FOWSP organised a competition in conjunction with Park Orchards Primary School. The competition was for posters for a “Your Water, Your Future” campaign. Entrants were required to design a publicity poster to raise awareness of the importance of looking after the Yarra River and its inhabitants, who are becoming endangered through the impact of litter.
All prize winners each received a trowel, pencils, a book about the environment, FOWSP literature, pamphlets from YRKA (Yarra RiverKeeper Association) and other environmental organisations. They also received a voucher for a plant from FOWSP's indigenous nursery and, all supplied in an Environment friendly shopping bag from Manningham City Council. The overall winners in each year group were also given a $20 Australian Geographic voucher. FOWSP will fund library books, to the school, to the value $450. The prizes were also sponsored by Melbourne Water, and we thank them for their support.
Within the school, the competition was organised by teacher Lyn Dennis. The final judging was undertaken by Sybille Ims, and Jason Patton of FOWSP, and two of the school's leaders, on the 9th of December. The presentations were made at the school assembly on 12 December.
Once again, FOWSP is indebted to Ian Penrose of YRKA, who spent the better part of a day, delivering his wonderful Powerpoint presentation on the state of the Yarra River, to set the scene for the competition.
We are hoping to continue these competitions in the future, to include further schools in the Warrandyte State Park area.
Once again, we would like to commend all the students on their sensational efforts. We are very appreciative to all those who participated. Of particular mention, is the number of times 'YRKA' and 'Yarra Riverkeepers' appeared in the finalists' posters.
